Pre-Order & Edition Bonus Summon Materia
Unlike the original title, Square Enix have decided to add three all-new Summon Materia to Final Fantasy Remake.
These can't be acquired normally in the game, but are instead pre-order bonuses. To download them at any time, go into your game and follow these instructions:
Main Menu — System — DLC — Select Summon — Download
These are the three Summon Materia you can obtain, and how to get them. They may be new to Final Fantasy VII, but they aren't new to fans of the series!
- Chocobo Chick Summon Materia: Pre-order bonus for all versions of the game.
- Carbuncle: Reward for purchasing Digital Deluxe and First Class editions of the game.
- Cactuar Summon Materia: Reward for purchasing Physical Deluxe, Digital Deluxe, and First Class editions of the game.
Chocobo Chick Summon Materia
Most Final Fantasy fans will remember Chocobo chicks from a hidden scene in the orignal title, but now they appear to have grown up to become a Summon in Remake.
This feisty little critter is a bit of a gamble in battle, however, as it uses Fire, Ice, Lightning or Wind magic at random. That might not play well with enemy strengths and weaknesses!
Chocobo Chick rightfully takes the award for Most "Shocking" Hair from our favourite protagonist himself, Cloud Strife...
Carbuncle Summon Materia
A long-time member of the Summon/Esper canon, Carbuncle first made its appearance in Final Fantasy V on the Super Nintendo.
It is known for its signature move, Ruby Light. In Remake, Carbuncle will support the party with buffs. For its Final Attack, it will heal the whole party.
However, there have been comments regarding the look of Carbuncle, as Square Enix appear to have changed it into a weird cat/dog hybrid instead of the series' classic look...
Cactuar Summon Materia
Appearing in the original game as a creature that inhabits its own island and grants tons of AP, Cactuar follows its Final Fantasy VIII sibling in becoming a fully-fledged Summon in Remake.
Another useful aid in that it deals non-elemental damage, Cactuar will unleash its super-famous 10,000 Needles attack before it departs. Naturally, this much damage can help turn the tide of any boss fight!
Naturally, you don't want to get on the bad side of its 'prickly' nature...
Be mindful that in Final Fantasy VII Remake you can only have one Summon Materia equipped per character. Switching them out as required for each battle is a necessary strategy, so use this guide whenever you need a reference point!
