Discovering your city and its surroundings while capturing Pokémon is a key part of Pokémon GO, and we explain you how in this guide!

When you are on the game map, you will certainly come across many blue disc-shaped structures. These will be found at well-known places — often with cultural connotations — such as monuments, art installations, churches, and so on. These are PokéStops.

When you are at a PokéStop, you will have the opportunity to spin it. This will give you Items (between 3 and 9, depending on the location), such as Poké Balls, Potions or even Eggs (see below). You will also receive 50 XP.

PokéStops have a five-minute cooldown. This means that you will have to wait five minutes between spinning the same PokéStop.

It is possible to assign a Lure Module to a PokéStop — if you do so, it will attract Pokémon to the PokéStop for half an hour (standard) for all players in the area to catch.

Niantic generally don't allow players to propose PokéStops, but the feature is currently in beta in certain locations. This is an aspect of the game taken from Niantic's precursor game, Ingress, and is used a lot in that game in rural areas, where PokéStops and Gyms are not very common.
