Sephiroth finally descends into battle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch. Here's how to play one of the greatest video game villains of all-time right now before his official release in five days on December 22.

What is Sephiroth Challenge?

Sephiroth is the big bad of FF7 and FF7R or in other words, Cloud's Bowser. Sakurai paid homage to the Shinra soldier with an exclusive limited-time mode. Defeat Sephiroth in a one-on-one stamina battle on the Northern Cave stage and the longest sword in the game is yours to command.

How to play Sephiroth Challenge?

Update your copy of Ultimate to version 10.0 to access the new mode. According to Sakurai, it will go live at 6 PM EST / 3PM PST. You must also purchase Fighters Pass 2.0 or Sephiroth to access the fight. There will be a new option on the top left of the main menu above the Smash icon. Press the + button to launch the challenge. A new "title screen" featuring Sephiroth will appear. Pick between Easy, Normal, and Very Hard to begin the battle. Win to enjoy him early!

How to beat Sephiroth in Smash Bros?

There isn't a special trick to defeating the one-winged angel. Simply play against Sephiroth the same way you would any other AI-controlled character. If you play a zoner, keep your distance to properly space projectiles and switch to a more aggressive style whenever he comes close. You can even just ran away while spamming or mashing if that's your thing. Likewise other rushdown, more combo heavy characters can play traditionally.

Sephiroth doesn't have any stat boosts or spirits to bolster his abilities. Be wary of his wing appearing whenever he is in danger since it will make him more threatening thanks to the additional speed and super armor on smash attacks.

Dealing the final blow also unlocks all-new Final Fantasy music and the Northern Cave stage.
