Available in a few hours on PS4 and PS5, God of War Ragnarok does not skimp on the accessibility options and difficulty modes available so that you have the most enjoyable experience possible. Note that no trophy in the game is linked to difficulty, so it will be possible to get platinum, whether you start in easy or directly in God of War.

God of War Ragnarok and its difficulty management

Overall if you don't pay too much attention to it and just play through the game normally, the game will feel well balanced with a few small spikes in challenge, but nothing too bad. But when we go into detail, we realize that the named bosses of the story are much less difficult than the side encounters in the various open areas of the world. This is something that you will especially feel during the last hours of the game, when you will face final bosses that are ultimately less devious than certain enemy enemy packs. This does not make the bosses of the scenario uninteresting, but their patterns are very readable and each of the phases is marked by a new waypoint.

You're just here for the story

It's still a shame, the fights of God of War Ragnarok have a lot to offer if you take a little interest in its light RPG mechanics and elemental afflictions. However, if you insist on it, the first two difficulty modes are perfect if you are not a fan of the action part of this new formula of God of War.

If you have already completed God of War (2018)

If you enjoy God of War combat and have already cleaned up 2018's from top to bottom and knocked down the Queen of the Valkyries, then we can recommend the hard mode without hesitation. This one brings a small dose of challenge while remaining quite affordable for an average level of game. It's going to take a bit of exploring and looking at gear upgrades to stay competitive, but nothing really insurmountable.

If you want a challenge worthy of a souls-like

A lot of things change in God of War mode. Good already, the enemies hit much harder and the afflictions they inflict take longer to disappear and cause more damage. Then, each monster is able to mutate and if the transformation completes, they level up and become immune to launchers, depriving you of juggling them in the air. Finally, the properties of their moves are changed in this state and yellow-circled attacks then become red-circled attacks. A vast program which will obviously extend the life of the game by asking you to persevere and reflect on your build. Finally, please note that once started in this difficulty, you will not be able to return to it if you decide to change it along the way.
