Since the sixth generation, IV Checker has been a very useful tool in determining whether or not your Pokémon has the right statistics. How to unlock it in Pokémon Sword and Shield and how to understand interpretations?

Pokemon Sword, Shield: How to Unlock the IV Checker and understand Individual Values

For players who want to know the potential of their Pokémon, know that the famous IV Checker is back in Pokémon Sword and Shield. This is not an NPC but a feature available in your Pokémon boxes that you will unlock quite late in the game.

How to unlock IV Checker?

The first step to unlock IV Checker is to finish the main story of your game. Once the league is defeated, you will have access to the Battle Tower in Wyndon. In the latter, you will have to win 6 solo fights until you reach level 4 by beating Tarak again. Once the fight is over, you will receive some rewards and the famous functionality of IV Checker.

How to use IV Checker?

To use IV Checker, you have to go through the Pokémon boxes. Once the cursor is on the Pokémon you want to analyze, you can change mode by using the + and - keys on your console to reach the "Check" mode. A little more friendly, the analysis of a Pokémon's IVs is not done with a dialogue that you have to restart each time. You can therefore navigate between all your creatures and consult their potential in real time.

Interpret the results of IV Checker:

As a reminder, IVs (individual values) are values given for each statistic of a Pokémon, namely HPs, Attack, Defense, Speed, Special Attack and Special Defense. For each of these statistics, a numerical value ranging from 0 to 31 is assigned. The higher the value, the better the statistic. A Pokémon called "IV Perfect" or "6 IV" therefore has a value of 31 in each of the above-mentioned statistics. However, Judge IV does not communicate digitally but through words. Here is the equivalence between numbers and formulations:

  • "No good..." : 0
  • "Decent..." : 1 à 15
  • "Pretty Good!" : 16 à 25
  • "Very good!" : 26 à 29
  • "Fantastic!" : 30
  • "Best" : 31

It is also important to know that it is possible to manipulate the IVs of your Pokémon in different ways: breeding, chaining, ultimate training. We will soon come back to these techniques with a complete guide on IV.
