The role of a coach sometimes goes unnoticed. Often it's the players who attract the spotlight and the coaches remain in the shadows. Yet they're also significant in the development of a team.
Whether at the strategic level or on a more human dimension, they guide the players and allow them to blossom.
This is all the more true in esports where players are often young people who, if poorly supervised, can quickly get lost and spoil their potential. This is why Cloud 9 has decided to recruit two new coaches for its Valorant team.
Ash "Chu" Long joins C9 as head coach. He comes from Overwatch where he coached Team Envy for over two years. He joins the ranks of the talents who leave this suffering scene to reconvert themselves. Chu didn't work in the Overwatch League but in the Overwatch Contenders.
James "JamezIRL" Macaulay will be a strategic coach. Coming from CS:GO, he seems very complementary to Chu. He's a former pro player who retired in 2017. Since then, he has been playing the role of secondary coach or consultant. He joined C9 in 2019 and moved from the CS:GO scene to Valorant.
With these two new additions, the team is hoping to make a step forward. It did well in several stages of the Ignition Series but failed to win a title (2nd during the PAX Invitational). For the moment, its prize list is made up of minor or charitable tournaments.
