The League of Legends European Championship (LEC) is set to resume on Friday, January 22, 2021 according to Riot Games' announcement on the LoL Esports portal. Additionally, the 2021 season will feature the same format as its 2020 counterpart.
The news comes a month ahead of the season start, which is set to take place fully online, without a live audience, as coronavirus related restrictions are in effect across Europe, Germany included.
The competition will potentially start with a superweek, as LEC commissioner Maximilian Peter "MAXtheX" Schmidt revealed via Twitter, with the possibility of a Week 8 superweek also being explored. Should both changes take effect, the season's duration may be congested to allow for rest for potential Mid-Season Invitational participants if the event takes place, an uncertainty considering the pandemic.
As for the production side, the LEC team is observing how events unfold as they may be able to work from the studio should restrictions allow for such a thing to happen. Should that not be possible, the team has a predecent to fall back upon: during the LEC's resumption in the 2020 spring split, the production crew worked online.
Although the format will be similar to the 2020 edition, with a clear divide between the spring and summer seasons, the LEC has yet to iron out the specifics—such as a point distribution that allows a strong spring performance to matter during the summer split.
