LoL: Riot explains Vex skin issues and why it wasn't what the community expected

Many players were surprised to see the skin that will accompany Vex on release, and now Riot has explained how a change in plans affected the champion ahead of her debut.

Although Vex has not yet hit the live servers in League of Legends, the new champion has enjoyed a positive reception from the community.

There haven't been too many complaints about her design or kit, and Riot has even received high praise for some of their decisions.

However, the community has pointed out one aspect they need to improve for future releases -- the alternative release skin that will accompany Vex with Patch 11.19.

A last minute change to the Vex skin

Ryan "Reav3" Mireles, Lead Champion Producer at Riot, has said that the original idea was for Vex to launch during the Sentinels of Light event, with an Unbound skin.

Similar to the concept with Thresh, having a skin in this line would be explained by her receiving the Black Mist from Viego, powering her up.

The reason for the change was that Riot didn't think the skin would 'have as much impact outside of the event'.

This is all the result of Riot having to push back the champion's release, given difficulties working her mechanics into the game. Reav3 himself stated that it was specifically her shadow tech that caused the delay.

Ultimately the change made sense in the scheme of tying the release and any skins into the lore of that particular patch, but one wonders just how an Unbound Vex would have turned out.

Vex is due to hit the live servers with the next patch on September 23.

The Vex Problem: Does League of Legends need a new graphics engine?

Vex will not quite be the champion Riot Games had in mind, and, to a large extent, that's due to the technology the game uses. It's a situation that raises an important question about the future of League of Legends.
