Former League of Legends champions are getting some big changes from Riot Games. Gameplay overhauls that the company calls "mid-range updates" have become very common practice and it doesn't look like the developers plan to stop anytime soon. Even less so when one of the team leaders in charge of champions confirmed to the community what was one of his next goals. This is Rell. Although the champion is rather recent, she has never really conquered the community.
Riot Games is already thinking of a big update for Rell
Reav3, Lead Champion Producer for League of Legends, told the community on Reddit , "Rell is a champion we're talking about as a possible target for an interim update, similar to what we recently did with Swain/ Olaf/Taliyah: We haven't started working on such an update yet, but she's a champion that we think is pretty high priority.
I personally think we missed the mark when it came to his whimsy. When we were early in development, she was a really interesting and cool champion. When she was on her horse, she was REALLY fast, and then she was really slow when she was on the ground. When we started balancing the champion much later in development, we discovered that his speed in his ascended form caused his optimal play to constantly leave his lane partner behind and wander throughout the game. turned out to be quite an unhealthy play pattern and so we had to reduce his movement speed on horseback to the point where his unique in-game identity kind of disappeared. Now she's just normal speed on the horse and super slow in armor, so she doesn't really have the super fast rider power in exchange for being slow the other half of the time.
I think we probably need to revisit her and see if we can take her power elsewhere (not into roving power) in a way that might give her a more unique identity and further separate her from Leona. Ideally, Rell is in a place where people who love Leona also want to play Rell. Both are excellent support tanks. Right now, if you like Leona, you probably don't have a good reason to also play Rell and that's something we'd like to address in a mid-range update."
Looking at his stats, Rell is the most unpopular recently released champion, appearing in only 1.3% of games .
Given that Riot Games considers the popularity of new champions to be one of the keys to long-term success, it's not too surprising that Rell is high on their priority list . The champion simply failed to convince summoners, being considered too similar to Leona in many aspects of her gameplay. Even today, when she's proven to be far more effective than her great rival in the support position, almost no one pays attention to her when it comes to picking her in ranked play. According to the developers, this is because players see no good reason to choose it over its competitor.
Riot Games has already shared some details about the areas they will be working on to improve Rell. The devs started by acknowledging their mistakes and claim they got sidetracked in creating its gameplay, which got worse as development progressed as their initial game pattern was to constantly move around the map . In this sense, they have assured that they will move her power in a different way, but which can move away a little more from the gameplay of Leona. She will always be similar, but the goal is to have more nuances that will make her a complementary character and not a substitute.
