The charismatic leader of AVALANCHE is one of the main playable characters in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Behind the mask of a warrior hides a daddy bear with a big heart.

Role

With a gun on his arm, Barret is naturally a man of distance. We'll add a little nuance to all this, however — in the Hollow theme trailer, you can clearly see him with equpped with the original game's Atomic Scissors equipped, so perhaps a little melee is on the cards.

He's the the only one to be equipped with Healing and Thunder materia from the start, two spells that will be very, very useful during the Reactor campaign and against the Scorpion Sentinel.

Abilities

  • Overcharge (Triangle): Barret launches a large burst of fire, causing reasonable damage to enemies and increasing their stun gauge. To reload, you can either strafe until the weapon turns red, or mash Triangle to charge it up faster.
  • Steelskin - 1 ATB Bar: With this technique, Barret mitigates more damage. This will be very useful against boss battles where significant damage is expected.
  • Focused Shot - 2 ATB Bars: A heavy sniper shot at a single target. This technique is quite expensive, so we recommend using it when you are sure the enemy will take maximum damage. It also significantly increases an enemy's stagger gauge.
  • Fire in the Hole: Barret's Level 1 Limit Break is basically a giant fireball — it's the equivalent of Heavy Shot from the original. This attack serves one purpose — deal a ton of damage.

Tips

  • In the absence of a good support-type character early on, Barret will have to improvise as a healer. In addition to the numerous consumables you'll pick up, he comes equipped with the Cure spell.
  • Recharging Overcharge means you're helpless for three or four seconds. This may not be as useful as it seems, especially when multiple targets are present.
  • Barret moves very slowly, so it's important to keep him at a distance and be aware of your positioning. Trying to take as little damage as possible is important.
