Update: The phase 2 Upgrade guide is now available here.
The new Relics — called Resistance Weapons — are now available in Final Fantasy XIV. For now, only the first step of this epic journey is available, granting you the first prototype of these almighty weapons.
In the future, it will be possible to undertake further challenges to upgrade your relic. According to our experience of the old relics already available in the game, upgrading your weapon will grant it more stats — and also change its look.
The process of upgrading a relic weapon has always been very long and grindy, Square Enix also confirmed in the Patch 5.25 Notes that this journey will also be a long one, so be ready to invest a lot of time in the process if you plan on maxing out your weapon.
Unlocking your Resistance Weapon
Getting your relic will first require that you clear the main story of the game — up until the "Shadowbringer" quest and the "The City of Lost Angels" 24-man alliance raid sidequest of the "Return to Ivalice" story.
To start the questline you will first need to go to Kugane and to talk to Keiten (X: 12.2 Y:13.3).
The quest will lead you through a lot of talking to various NPCs in order to introduce the story, before actually getting you to work.
Without spoiling the story here, you will need to clear an instanced duty. This one is quite long, and can be difficult according to the job you are playing — so having a 470 ilevel is quite important here.
Once the Instanced duty is done, there's a bit more talking and then you will be rewarded with your first Resistance Weapon, for free (just a lot of work)!
It IS possible to get your weapon for every class you own at Level 80. The first step of the process is shortened, but the next steps should be of the same length each time you work on a new one.
To get a new weapon for another job you just need to gather four Thavnairian Scalepowders from Rowena's vendors in Mor Dhona or Idyllshire.
The first iteration of the weapon comes with an ilevel of 485 and five materia slots. On the other hand, given the first iteration of this relic is very basic, we can expect that the incoming upgrades are going to be a hell lot of farming!
We will update this article along with new content regarding the upgrades, so make sure to check-in regularly!
