FFXIV Macro Guide: Change hotbars, job and glamour in just a snap

Macros are really useful in FFXIV from Toggling hotbars, changing your job or your glamour plate while using emotes here is how to do it!

There is a lot you can do with macros in Final Fantasy XIV and even if they can look a bit scary at first, they're quite easy to use so don't worry!

In this guide we'll cover the following uses of macros:

  • How to toggle and hide hotbars
  • How to change job via a macro
  • How to add an emote to a change job macro
  • How to change the glamour plate you are using via a macro

Before going into the macro guide, here's how all these points look in a short video.

FFXIV Macro Guide

To create a macro, head to the main menu and select User Macros then head to the shared tab if you want the macros to be shared on all your characters.

How to toggle and hide hotbars

To toggle and hide a hotbar you will first need to set the bar where you want on your HUD and make sure this bar is shared across all your jobs if you want to use it on each of them as shown on the video.

  • To toggle and hide a hot bar the macro to use is: /hotbar display [Hotbar Number].
  • Pressing the macro again will hide the indicated hotbar.

On the video I set a macro to show/hide a hotbar on which I have created macros that show/hide more macros and added a macro to close all the bars.

NOTE: If you use a macro designed to close more than one hotbar and that one of the hotbar is not opened, the macro will close the other bars and open the closed one.

How to change job using a macro

To change your job easily using a macro you will need to set a gear set in your character tab for each job you plan to do a macro for.

Once that's done you'll simply need to use the following command:

  • /gs change [Gear Set Number]

If you want the macro to have the same icon as the select job you can use:

  • /macroicon [Gear Set Number] gearset

How to add an emote to a change job macro

Adding an emote to an existing macro is very simple, the only trick is the use of the /wait option. In fact, some emotes are longer than others and changing job can stop the emote if is used before in the macro.

To add an emote before changing job you can use:

  • /[Emote Text Command]
  • /wait [Waiting Time] (For the snap for example, /wait 1 is enough for me.)

NOTE: You can also add <wait.1> after the /snap to avoid creating a /wait line. It then looks like that: /[Emote Text Command] <wait.1>

Here is how the complete macro looks for me when I want to switch to Paladin.

FFXIV Macro change job & glamour guide

If you want to use an emote after changing job, using /wait might not be as useful, it's up to you.

How to change the glamour plate you are using via a macro

The short answer to this issue is that there is not a text command to change your glamour plate directly but there is a very easy macro to go around the issue and change your glamour as you wish, you will need more of them, on per plate and per job actually.

FFXIV Change Glamour Plate using macros

As you can see on this screenshot, I currently have two macros for each job on which I want to change glamour plates.

The macro is designed this way:

  • I use the /snap emote as seen before
  • I use /wait 1 to wait for the emote to be in a state I like
  • The macro takes the icon of Paladin because I use /macroicon 1 gearset and Paladin is my gearset number 1.
  • /gs change 1 8 change my current gearset to 1, changing my job to paladin, but what about the 8?

Adding a second number after the gearset number lets you specify to the macro which glamour plate you want to apply to it when changing job. Meaning I will always switch to Paladin with glamour plate number 8 applied when I use this macro.

If I'm already playing Paladin when using this macro, only the glamour will change.

Note: For this macro to work you need to make sure you don't have a glamour plate currently linked to the gearset and that you can equip the selected glamour plate.

And here you have it, I really liked setting up all this macro and enjoy changing classes, glamour plate in a snap and hope it helped you too.
