The iconic Blastoise is a devastating ranged Defender in Pokémon Unite, available from the store for 8,000 Aeos Coins or 460 Aeos Gems.

Our guide helps you understand Blastoise's moveset and choose the best abilities as you level up, as well as suggest the best Held Items and Battle Items to equip.

You'll start the battle as Squirtle, evolving into Wartortle at Level 5 and Blastoise at Level 9.

Blastoise: Item Choices

These are the items we recommend equipping on Blastoise before you head into battle.

Be mindful that you can equip up to three Held Items and one Battle Item. All stats are based on items being Level 1, without having been upgraded.

Level 30: Sp. Attack +24

Battle Item

Eject Button

Cooldown: 55 seconds

Quickly moves your Pokémon in the designated direction.

Blastoise is the Defender you want when you need to hold a position and create havoc for the enemy team. Its kit relies on large-area crowd control, and is ideal for setting up ambushes.

Focus Band is a standard tank item that allows you to hold out even longer than expected in 1v2 situations, or against the most-fed Pokémon, while you wait for the cavalry to arrive.

Buddy Barrier serves a similar purpose, especially if you stick close to your team, while the Wise Glasses add to Blastoise's offensive capabilities.

As with most tanks, the Eject Button is pretty standard.

Blastoise Gameplay

Blastoise: Starting Attack

Water Gun

Cooldown: 9 seconds

Blastoise shoots a jet of water in a straight line, damaging, stunning, and knocking back enemies hit. Enemies hit are also slowed for 1 second.

When in doubt, go with the offensive move that provides the most utility. Water Gun adds a stun and knockback to its damage, making it ideal for early trades.

Blastoise: Best Moves

Hydro Pump

Cooldown: 10 seconds

Blastoise shoots a large amount of water: damaging, stunning, and knocking back enemies hit.

Level 11: Hydro Pump deals increased damage.

Surf

Cooldown: 12 seconds

Blastoise rides a large wave in the designated direction, damaging, stunning, and knocking back enemies hit. Blastoise is unstoppable while surfing, and once it ends, Blastoise can jump in a designated direction. The wave continues for a short duration after Blastoise has leapt off and continues to knock back enemies hit but inflicts no damage.

Level 13: Blastoise gains a small shield when hitting an enemy with Surf.

We've gone for a kit that adds the most utility, perfect for preventing the advance of the enemy team towards your goals or pushing them back from theirs.

Hydro Pump leads this, knocking back enemies quite some distance, while Surf allows you to reposition yourself while applying another dose of CC.

Your role with this build will be to defend a position, but you can also be proactive in trapping the enemy - position yourself behind the enemy, attack with Surf, then follow up with Hydro Pump to push them into your waiting teammates.

At Level 9, this tactic just gets even worse for the enemy, as you unlock your Hydro Typhoon Unite Move.

Blastoise: Passive Ability

Torrent

Increases Attack and Sp. Attack by 20% while at half HP or less.
