Cyberpunk 2077: Is it time to get started? Patch 1.6 (September 2022)

More than a year and a half after its catastrophic release, CP2077 was entitled to corrective patches, such as 1.6, and improvements from CD Red Projekt, DLC and especially the Edgerunners anime. If you've had the wisdom to wait, here's our take on the current state of the game.

Even if a certain number of Cyberpunk 2077 players found their account (especially on PC), the game turned out to be well below expectations, and what had been promised by the studio. Rather than suffer performance issues, multiple bugs, and other inconveniences, and therefore waste your precious game time, the best thing to do was to take your troubles patiently, and go play something else, while waiting. that CD Projekt Red resolves the situation, much like Hello Games did with No Man's Sky.

As Cyberpunk was released in December 2020, it is legitimate to think that the studio had time to rectify the situation, right? With the release of the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime, many gamers are tempted to buy the game, or relaunch it. For this reason, we will attempt to answer this question, since the answer is not so obvious, and more to be quite subjective.

This could be Cyberpunk 2077's official tagline.

The bugs

The good news is that almost all of the huge bugs that were breaking the game and blocking progress have been squashed. It is on this point, as well as on the performance of the game that CD Projekt Red has focused since the launch. Expect to encounter small bugs and glitches on occasion, which will break the immersion a bit, but that shouldn't stop you from moving forward properly.

Play on Xbox One and PS4

Surely Cyberpunk 2077's biggest problem upon release was the fact that it was both hideous and nearly unplayable on the consoles owned by the vast majority of gamers at the time. Over the patches, it has been improved, and although it is far from beautiful, we can actually consider it playable on PS4 and Xbox One in acceptable conditions . Expect to see some elements appear quite late on the screen. A lot of players also experience occasional crashes, so that's something you have to be prepared to accept. It is better to have the reflex to save your game regularly. Note in passing that the next updates and the extension will not be available on these "old" consoles. If you have no intention of buying a PC or a new console, then now is the time to restart the game.

Next Gen version: Xbox Series and PS5

Since patch 1.5, Cyberpunk 2077 is officially available and "optimized" for Next Gen consoles. It's then very pretty, and the game generally runs well, if we put aside the inevitable bugs. The game still has a tendency to crash on occasion for some players, but it is far from being generalized.

Patch 1.5 improvements.

What have been added since the release?

Patch 1.6 entitled Edgerunners, which accompanies the excellent anime of the same name, brought new improvements to the game, such as equipment transmogrification, new weapons and some content. Arcade terminals finally allow you to play Roach Race.

Fixing immediate issues, like performance issues, bugs, and the police teleporting 2 meters behind your back, aside, CD Projekt Red still has its work cut out for it with Cyberpunk 2077, and it doesn't. there hasn't really been a redesign worthy of the name. The choices made in the dialogues are still inconsistent, the police still don't know how to drive (this should be fixed in the next patch), there is no 3rd person camera. The balance of talents, weapons, behavior and behavior of the AI in combat have nevertheless been improved, among many other things. For their part, the rare DLC introduced are accessories or cosmetics, with an appearance for Johnny, a car, a jacket, and other elements of no interest. Patch 1.5 went the right way all the same, as it added 4 apartments for purchase, as well as customizable items inside . Some weapons and accessories have also been added to provide a touch of novelty. But there are no new story arcs. However, we were treated to some new quests and contracts with Patch 1.6.

So, is it time to play Cyberpunk 2077?

The short answer is still: no . It's obviously up to you to decide in the end, but from our point of view, it is better to continue to wait. Cyberpunk 2077 is a pretty good game, and it's possible to get it for a small price when it's on sale, making it a bargain (if you don't already have it). But it is very far from reaching its full potential, since many features are missing, and bugs still linger. Officially, CD Projekt Red is working on the Phantom Liberty expansion, and we can expect patches to keep coming in the coming months. The longer you wait, the better the gaming experience will be. Visually, Cyberpunk 2077 is still among the most beautiful games out there, and it's definitely going to stay that way for a long time, so there's no need to worry that it'll take a " getting old" soon.

Here are two major features that are still missing, and which should arrive in the next patch(s):

  • Revamped police, who will finally learn to drive and chase you in cars. The dreaded MaxTac will also make its entrance, in order to calm you down with elite troops if you play like in GTA.
  • New Game Plus mode.
