Pokémon Scarlet Violet: Which Starter to choose at the beginning of the adventure?

At the start of your adventure in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and as in all licensed games, you will have to choose a starter from three creatures. Of Water , Fire and Grass types, these first Pokémon of the 9G Pokédex have characteristics of their own that are important to take into account when making your choice. This takes place a few minutes into the game and you'll have to walk them from your house to the big building at the end of the road. Moreover, rest assured, it is possible to run once the first meters have been covered.

To make your choice, you must mainly consider:

  • The aesthetics of the Pokémon: first of all, take the starter that you like the most physically, as well as its evolution!
  • His talents for strategy in PvE but also in PvP,
  • The double-type of its final evolution.

Beware of spoilers in this article: the evolutions of the starters are present.

Sprigatito: the Plant-type starter

General informations

Let's start with the plant starter, which seems to be the most popular of the three on the internet. This Plant Cat Pokémon is capricious and loves to attract attention.

  • Type : Plant
  • Fertilizer Talent : increases the power of the Pokemon's Plant-type moves when its HP is below 1/3
  • Strengths : very effective against Water , Rock and Ground types
  • Weaknesses : very weak against Fire , Ice , Insect , Poison and Flying typesNote that Sprigatito acquires the Plant /Dark double-type during its second evolution. This then makes it vulnerable to Fighting and Fairy types but immune to Psychic type.

Its two evolutions

Sprigatito can evolve into Floragato then into Meowscarada.

Why choose it?

Firstly because he's really cute and his final evolution is clearly the least terrible (but that's just up to your tastes) and secondly because he can learn Dark-type abilities very early on that will be of your help. a big help at the start of the game. Without spoiling too much, your Miascarade will have a definite advantage during the first battle of the Pokémon League and against one of the arenas of The Master's Path.

Fuecoco: the Fire-type starter

General informations

The second starter is the Fire-type one and it has a rather funny face. This Fire Croc Pokémon likes to go at its own pace and is quite laid back.

  • Type : Fire
  • Talent Blaze : increases the power of the Pokémon's Fire-type moves when its HP is less than 1/3
  • Strengths : the Fire type allows it to be very effective against Pokémon of the Steel , Ice , Insect and Plant types, to which it will itself be resistant.
  • Weaknesses : Fuecoco will be very vulnerable against Water , Rock and Ground types, and its attacks will not be very effective against Dragon and Fire types as well.

Note that Fuecoco acquires the Fire / Ghost dual-type during its second evolution. This then makes it vulnerable to Ghost and Dark types as well, but it is immune to Fighting type.

Its two evolutions

Fuecoco can evolve into Crocalor and then into Skeledirge.

Why choose it?

Fuecoco is probably the starter with the most advantages on the Arena and League side. He can easily overcome two arenas and one of the tests to become Master. However, beware of its many weaknesses. Fuecoco is also a good choice for "beginners" since the first arena you will head to will certainly be the Plant type.

Quaxly: the Water-type starter

General informations

Last but not least is the Water starter. This is a duckling wearing a headdress. This Pokémon is rather serious and it is careful.

  • Type : Water
  • Talent Torrent : increases the power of the Pokémon's Water-type moves when its HP is less than 1/3
  • Strengths : Quaxly will have the advantage over Pokémon of the Fire , Rock and Ground types.
  • Weaknesses : on the other hand, it is very ineffective on Dragon , Water and Plant types, and will be very weak against Electric and Plant type attacks.

Note that Quaxly acquires the Water / Combat double-type during its second evolution. This then makes it vulnerable to Flying , Psychic , and Fairy types.

Its two evolutions

Quaxly can evolve into Quaxwell then Quaquaval.

Why choose it?

Although Quaxly does not have immunity unlike Poussacha and Chochodile, he also does not have a double weakness (x4), which allows him to be quite resistant in most situations. Once you master the type table and build your team to have Pokémon of different types, all you have to do is switch monsters in battle to avoid hurting Quaxly.
