You've never touched a Battle Royale before? You want to assimilate the basics before you start your first game? You have come to the right place.

Fortnite: The beginner's guide

Be careful, this guide is intended for beginners, those who have never felt the wind blowing on their faces when jumping from the combat bus or heard the discharges of weapons on the battlefield. This is for those who don't want to land in their first match without knowing anything, these are only the basic rules and if you already have some matchs to your credit, go to our advanced guides instead.

What is a Battle Royale?

Battle Royale is a type of game where several players are dropped on a map that gradually shrinks and on which you can find weapons of all kinds. The goal is simple, find the best weapons, eliminate the other players, and stay within the ever narrower limits of the map to ultimately be the last man standing.

Fortnite

Fortnite is a relatively simple Battle Royale to handle, but if you have never touched this kind of game, this guide is likely to be useful to you.

How to get to the map?

You start by appearing on a small island, surrounded by the other players, this is the lobby where everyone is waiting for the game to start. Take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with the controls, and if you can get your hands on a weapon, practice a little shooting.

When all the players have arrived, you will automatically be taken on the battle bus, a flying machine flying over the map. When the bus arrives over the main island, the game starts, you can jump whenever you want.

Fortnite

Warning: The earlier you jump, the more likely you are to be followed by many players. If you wait long enough, the bus will automatically drop you off on the other side of the island.

Once in the air, you can immediately activate your glider to fall down slowly, or you can also drop in free fall. However, try to reach the ground as quickly as possible, in order to find weapons before other players. So drop out as soon as possible, then when the game forces you to open your glider, head for the area that you find most interesting.

How to equip yourself?

You are finally on the ground. Now, find weapons as quickly as possible, they appear in the buildings, so it is much easier to get equipped if you land in town than if you get lost in the forest. But of course, cities are more crowded, and you will probably have to fight.

The most useful objects are: weapons and their ammunition, healing items, and shield potions.

For more details on their use, visit the dedicated guides.

Why do I have a pickaxe?

Because Fortnite is half a fighting game, and half Minecraft. Use your pickaxe to destroy some elements of the map to build others.

Are you stuck in a house while an opponent is watching the door? No problem, break a wall on the other side of the house and run away.

Fortnite

You are in the middle of a plain and you are being shot at. No problem, use the bricks recovered by breaking the wall of earlier and build another wall to protect yourself.

Construction is one of the hardest aspects of the game, so go check our specialized guide.

I have equipment, now what?

All the players you meet are enemies. So as soon as you meet someone, don't hesitate to open fire first.

You can also do everything to avoid fighting. After all, whoever finishes a game by taking part in 10 fights takes much more risks than whoever finishes it by fighting only once. To attract as little attention as possible, avoid the busiest areas and stay squatting to be less visible and to make less noise.

Should we be wary of the storm?

Watch your map, the storm is gradually closing on the island and it is not good to get caught. The storm is this blue area on your map. The good news is that the storm is moving at regular intervals.

It moves for a few minutes, then stops for a few moments. A white circle will show you exactly where the storm will stop. If you are still inside the white circle, you are safe.

Fortnite

Each time the storm reaches the white circle, a new smaller circle is indicated and then the storm starts again. At the end of the game the white circle became so small that all the players were gathered in the same place. So no one can hide in a corner of the map and refuse to fight throughout the game.

If, despite everything, there is more than one player left alive for too long, the white circle will disappear completely and the storm will cover the entire map, killing all the remaining players. Then, it is the last player to die last from the damage caused by the storm that wins.

Nevertheless, to win it is better to kill all your opponents. Fortnite is, after all, a shooting game.
