It's no longer a secret: Valorant — the new game from Riot Games Studios — is a FPS in which ten players will compete against each other on several maps. Currently the game is thought to be free-to-play for a summer 2020 release on PC. Is it a utopia to believe that Valorant could have a good potential and that it could one day arrive on home console or laptop?
For the moment it has been confirmed by Riot Games that Valorant will be released on PC in the summer 2020 with a beta phase some time before. It's no fooling to wonder about the potential of a fast FPS with a clean artistic direction and optimal optimization designed for gamer performance on home consoles — especially PS4 and Xbox One. The game seems to be suitable for the use of a controller.
It's a good idea for game developers to extend the release of their games on different platforms, as Epic Games has proven with Fortnite and its crossplay, and Blizzard with Overwatch, including a Switch version released a few months ago. It should be noted that Riot Games is already experimenting with porting its Legend of Runeterra and TFT games to mobile phones.
We strongly believe that it would be a clever move to be able to adapt such a game to different consoles to reach an ever wider audience. When you look at the number of sales recorded by PlayStation with its PS4 — more than 100 million consoles sold worldwide since its release — or Nintendo with the Switch — more than 40 million sales worldwide — it's legitimate to imagine the positive impact that a game like this could have on this type of market, especially as it is free-to-play.
Finally, the main reason why we believe that a console release can clearly be a good idea is that 2020 will be marked by the arrival of the new generation of consoles — carried by PS5 and Xbox Scarlett at the end of the year. A proper cross-platform implementation could boost gamer interest and the affluence Valorant could experience.
We remind you that nothing has been confirmed by Riot Games and that these are only hypotheses and assumptions from gamers who would like a spread out release on consoles. We will keep you informed if information on the subject is relayed by the publisher.
