The open war between Epic Games and Apple is affecting other players in the gaming world. This is what Phil Spencer, Microsoft's vice president of gaming, said recently. The boss of Xbox released a document on Twitter explaining how the loss of support for Unreal Engine could have dramatic consequences for the video game industry and jobs.
The very popular graphics engine designed by Epic Games is at the heart of Microsoft's concerns. Used by cohorts of developers around the world, according to Phil Spencer, it must remain accessible to everyone, including on IOS and MacOS.
The Apple retaliation is a consequence of Epic Games' initiative. On August 13, the creators of Fortnite bypassed the standard purchase via App Store by creating their own payment system integrated into the battle royale. It allows them to bypass Apple's famous 30% tax on online purchases.
Very quickly, support for Epic Games accumulated (Spotify, Tinder...), but Microsoft is the first brand to really get involved in this case. Apple finds itself more and more alone in this battle, which could well "last for years", according to Tim Sweeney, the founder of Epic Games.
