At a high level, landing from the battle bus is a millimetric operation in Fortnite. The trajectory of the fall is studied and worked on before the competitions to ensure that players land nose to nose with a chest, and can fight directly if necessary.
The snag is that the 100% chest appearance rate has just been removed via patch 14.00 and the beginning of Season 4. From now on, the chests on the map are divided into two categories:
- Some chests have a spawn rate of 50% to 100%.
- Others have a spawn rate of 70% to 100%.
In other words, gamblers are no longer certain to find a glittering chest in one place or another. Epic Games hasn't communicated the reasons for this initiative. Some experts believe that the goal is to prevent the pros from sharing entire locations or spawns.
For professional players, this is a major blow. In addition to not being able to gather their ideal equipment as quickly as possible, they sometimes suffer very unfavorable landings, without being able to land on a chest, and with enemies close by.
Many pros have stepped up to the plate on the first day of Season 4, calling for the return of the "100% chest".
Admittedly, this new spawn rate trunks breaks (a little) the sometimes routine and repetitive aspect of landing, and can spice things up in a contested house for example. On the other hand, it incorporates even more RNG even in the competitive scene, where it's quite badly experienced on the whole.
It's not uncommon for pros to complain from time to time about coming out of a place "without a full shield", or without a quality shotgun. This change in the rate of appearance of the chests will necessarily increase the share of chance in the battle royale — and won't fail to create frustration at the highest level.
