PSVR2: Sony granted new VR hardware patent

Despite playing coy on the subject, Sony could well have a PS5-compatible PSVR2 headset in the pipeline, after a new patent was granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

PSVR2: Sony granted new VR hardware patent

Dutch website LetsGoDigital have uncovered documents pertaining to a new VR/AR headset invented by Steven Osman, Head of Sony's Magic Lab department and SIE's Principal Software Engineer.

Titled 'Pressure sensing to identify fitness and comfort of virtual reality headset', the patent was originally filed back in 2016, and consists of two parts — the headset itself, featuring haptic feedback, and a set of VR/AR goggles.

According to Sony's Senior VP of Global Product Strategy and Management, Hideaki Nishino, he expects 'a VR experience that is appropriate for the PS5', but for now the firm is remaining tight-lipped on whether or not an actual PSVR2 headset is in active development.

The full description of the headset according to the patent filing is as follows:

A sensor generates signals representing whether a computer game headset is being worn properly so that the wearer may be advised.

The sensor may be a pressure sensor or motion sensor or stretch sensor on the headset, or it may be a camera that images the wearer and uses image recognition to determine if the headset is on correctly.

Additionally one or more light emitting diodes (LED) and/or one or more haptic feedback generators may be mounted on the headset for purposes to be shortly disclosed.
