Could Steam be making a console?

The latest update from Steam seems to hint at Valve’s plans to create a console-like device, with the files referencing a “SteamPal” device

Could Steam be making a console?

Steam’s latest client beta has some references which have led to speculation that the developer may be releasing a console. Uncovered by Pavel Djundik, the update has references to “SteamPal” and “SteamPal Games” — which seems to  be in relation to something codenamed “Neptune”

The update also added references to menus, such as "quick access" and "power" — including options to shut down, suspend or restart a system.

This wouldn't be a first for the developer, having dabbled in hardware before — such as the Valve Index VR Headset.

Earlier this month CEO Gabe Newell, was asked whether Steam would be putting any games on console, his response was "You will get a better idea of that by the end of this year,” he replied, before adding, “and it won’t be the answer you expect.”

So is it possible that Steam is creating a console, or will it be available on already existing consoles? We'll keep you updated!
