The Steam Deck's dock will not boost the console's performance

The announcement of the Steam Deck sent shockwaves through the industry, with Valve's portable PC sparking a scramble to secure a preorder come the end of the year.

However, a new detail has emerged -- in a report from PC Gamer, engineer Greg Coomer has revealed that the dock used to link the handheld to a TV or monitor will not boost the power of the device, unlike that of the Nintendo Switch.

Valve's intention is that the performance of the handheld remains the same between docked and handheld mode.

According to Valve, 30fps is the minimum playable framerate at that resolution -- with no guarantee of performance at higher options.

According to Coomer, Valve "really wanted to prioritize for using it in what we thought would be the highest use case, which is actually mobile."

The first Steam Decks are scheduled to be shipped at the end of the year, following the preorder scramble. Should you wish to preorder now, you'll be given a tentative date well into 2022.
