The new item system in League of Legends has been far from a success since its introduction, and after a period of relative calm, criticism regarding the new items has reared once again.
However, one positive point is that the rework has led to the appearance of unexpected combinations,. alternative builds that in the past would have been considered trolling.
The unexpected winning combination
One such combination that is yielding results is a combo for marksmen -- specifically Twitch. Players are picking up the Titanic Hydra for the Plague Rat, an item that has lost much of its usefulness this season.
That hasn't stopped players taking it on Twitch, a champion who is often prone to having strange builds in League of Legends.
The idea behind taking it on Twitch is to take advantage of the range bonus offered by his R - Spray and Pray, and its ability to cut through opponents through area-of-effect damage.
It's quickly become the second-most popular third-item build among players, and has a winrate comparable to that of Infinity Edge.
The most curious thing about this choice is that it gives rise to build that doesn't include a Mythical item.
It also serves to take advantage of Wit's End, with that item being in a good place in the meta right now, leading to higher survivability for the ADC. While the math says we'll do less damage per hit, we'll be able to hit for longer and with the cleave benefits.
This trend is currently limited to Twitch, but taking into account the current state of ADCs and their tendency to get break the meta in terms of builds, we may soon see more alternative builds like this in League of Legends.
It's proof that, as both Riot and the community agree, the new item system is a good idea, with a lot of unrealised potential.
