Released three years ago on PC and consoles, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is the free game on the Epic Games Store for December 22.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden was an appealing game at first, full of good ideas. However, the implementation of these ideas wasn't the best.
Attempting a purely tactical approach to the game will lead to stinging defeats given the balance of power with the enemy, and you'll end up realizing that it's far too easy to just abuse assassinations instead.
The small squad sizes, the lack of variety in the bestiary, and the many interface issues means it's a game in which you could quickly lose interest. Abusing grenades also makes battles somewhat trivial.
By increasing the difficulty or forcing oneself not to use overpowered mechanics, we instead find ourselves obliged to permanently rotate teammates, and to micromanage builds for each individual fight -- something that also becomes tedious. Having to dig through everything for junk also quickly becomes boring.
It's a shame that every facet of the gameplay reaches its limits so quickly, losing its charm, especially when the game can be completed in well under 20 hours. This is even the case for the story, which is simplistic and predictable, but saved by the artistic direction and the neat atmosphere.
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is a game full of character and potential, but with a clumsiness and lack of ambition that means you'll probably move on very quickly.
Still, it's worth playing when it's free!
