One of the big goals of the League of Legends development team is for all champions to be used across all levels of the game. While this is an almost impossible dream given the complexity of the settings, the fact is that Riot Games is moving in the right direction with constant updates that increase the popularity of old characters and very interesting novelties that attract the attention of the community.
However, in competitive play, the story is a bit different and some champions have yet to appear by the time we reach the first half of the season.
The worst champions no one chooses in competition
Looking at the situation across all official Riot Games leagues, only five champions haven't appeared as picks or bans in encounters: Brand, Garen, Katarina, Rammus, and Swain. The truth is, they were barely around in season 11, too. competitive game.
Although we have only reached the first half of the season and are heading towards MSI 2022, thousands of games have already been played across all leagues. The total figure stands at 2,841 matches, and the fact that these characters haven't appeared speaks volumes about their lackluster performance at the professional level. Luckily, though, they're more than viable in ranked play. All of the aforementioned characters have around 50% win rate and could not easily be upgraded to appear in tournaments.
If we change register and focus only on the so-called major leagues (LEC, LPL, LCK, PCS and LCS), the situation changes radically. Under these conditions, there would remain a total of 27 champions who have not yet been selected or banned . Among them there are surprising absences like Anivia, Elise, Quinn or Taliyah. It's true that none of the ones mentioned above are regulars in competitive play, but they do tend to be used from time to time in specific comps that seek to distance themselves from the meta a bit . You can find the full list in the image below.
While we've already noted Riot Games' good work with past champion updates, it's still going to take a long time for the studio to bring as many champions into competitive play as they want.
Luckily, the updates are just around the corner, and League of Legends will get two more in the upcoming 12.9 patch. In this case, it will be Taliyah and Olaf who will be entitled to a new version in terms of gameplay.
