Over two years ago, Riot Games shut down the official League of Legends forums, making the MOBA page on Reddit increasingly popular. This is where the developers deliver game news and players discuss a range of game-related topics. However, what appeared to be just a forum has already rescued the original splashart of a champion from LoL: Graves, and it's a story that stuck with the community, as a number of players got together to reverse a decision they didn't accept.
Serious without a cigar?
In 2014, Riot Games removed the cigar the champion smokes from his original splashart. The developer wanted to standardize its visuals across the planet, but for that, some issues needed to be addressed. In some countries, the presence of tobacco in the images raises the minimum age limits for games, in the same way as for themes such as violence, alcohol and sex.
As a result, Graves was left without his cigar and it became a meme in the community, which began to insist that Riot's decision was a mistake . Players made a series of comparisons like "Champion X can have Y, but Graves can't have his cigar".
With the community so insistent, Rioter Marc " Tryndamere " Merrill promised that if a post asking for the return of the cigar reached the top of the LoL subreddit, then it would be reintroduced. A Reddit user named SimplifyEUW then created a thread on April 1, 2017 with the following title: "OUR LORD AND SAVIOR MARC MERRIL SAID IF THIS POST GETS TO THE TOP OF R/ALL HE WILL MAKE HIS CIGAR GRAVES!" ".
The community's victory quickly materialized, with the post reaching over 68,000 positive karma points , the popularity scale used by Reddit. So Riot delivered on its promise some time later, in April 2017, when Tryndamere posted a photo of Graves with his cigar. These things don't always happen, but this time the community won.
