The League of Legends World Championship started today! Did you miss the games? Wondering which team sprang a surprise? Here at Millenium, we got your back covered with the complete recap of the first day of the Play-in phase!
Match 1 — Clutch Gaming vs. Unicorns of Love
It took just 38 minutes for Unicorns of Love to beat Clutch Gaming, but it just feels like Huni and his teammates never really had a chance.
With Innaxe picking Heimerdinger in the botlane, the Unicorns of Love composition was surely awkward — but they managed to pull it off despite an error-strewn game for both teams.
After taking down three barons and four drakes, the CIS region champions prevailed in the first game of the Play-In Stage.
Match 2 — Splyce vs DetonatioN FocusMe
That's what we call a stomp. Splyce took the gold lead during the early-game, and never actually let it go.
Twenty-six minutes later, Xerxe and his teammates had broken the DFM base, closing out the game a few minutes later with a final score of 22 kills to 7.
In the end, the EU third seed just proved too strong for the LJL champions.
Match 3 — MAMMOTH vs Unicorns of Love
It wasn't quite a stomp, but the OPL champions surely proved their region has nothing to be ashamed of. It took them almost 20 minutes to take the gold lead, but it felt like they were constantly in control of the game, punishing UoL's chaotic style.
Down four drakes, UoL couldn't prevent MAMMOTH destroying their mid inhibitor and cracking their base. It was almost over, but BOSS' Renekton held firm.
However, just one more teamfight was needed for MAMMOTH to crush the dreams of UoL. Following an incredible ace, they calmly took their opponents' nexus for the victory.
Match 4 — DetonatioN FocusMe vs Isurus Gaming
This was the first game of the day that wasn't one-sided. With almost one kill every minute until the mid-game, both teams struggled to seize the lead.
After 35 minutes, DetonatioN FocusMe slowly started to lose the kill advantage — notably because Isurus Gaming had secured four drakes.
A close fight around the Baron pit eventually led to an ace and a Baron for Isurus Gaming, who then proceeded to choke the LJL champions in their base for the win.
Match 5 — MAMMOTH vs Clutch Gaming
This game felt like the LCK, with only 3 kills after 21 min — but nothing seemed enough to stop the momentum of Clutch Gaming.
By taking down eight turret plates, Huni and his teammates built a 3k gold lead at 15 minutes, securing four drakes in the process.
MAMMOTH managed to steal the Baron after 32 minutes, but it wasn't enough to prevent Huni and his teammates from taking down two inhibitors and eventually the Nexus.
Match 6 — Splyce vs Isurus Gaming
With six kills at 17 minutes, Splyce quickly built a 6k gold lead — and it feels like Isurus Gaming never stood a chance.
At 23 minutes, four of their towers had already fallen, while all Splyce defenses were still up.
By securing the Baron at 27 minutes, the EU third seed managed to quickly close out the game to lead of Group B at the end of Day 1.
Splyce take the lead of Group B but the competition is far from being over! Tomorrow will see the teams of Group B compete against each other — but who will prevail?!
