Once you start gathering and crafting in Final Fantasy XIV you will quickly realise how important equipment optimisation is. Just like in PVE, you will need to meld some materia to your equipment to make the most of it.
While materia can be quite expensive there are ways of getting those that some people tend to forget before rushing to the market board. In fact there are two main ways of getting materias without using any money:
- Scrips
- Spiritbond

FFXIV Getting gatherer materias using Scrips
The materias are devided in two ways:
- White scrips: Level 9 materias
- Purple scrips: Level 10 materias
You can exchange the materias by talking to any Scrip exchange NPC available in the main cities.
FFXIV Getting materias using Spiritbond
The spiritbond augment with how much you use your equipment in FFXIV, meaning that the more you use it the more materias you will be able to extract from it. The important part is that you will only be able to get materias IX and X if you extract them from gear that is level 81+.
Usually when you farm materias using spiritbond you want to use the lastest gear with the complete melding. You can then use the various buffs to augment your spiritbond speed and extract materias as soon as possible to not waste %.
Obviously, farming spiritbond is way easier for gatherers than crafters as gatherers can simply spam nodes all day long.
