While Epic Games has made great strides in keeping up with the competitive scene — including the balancing of certain Fortnite weapons and items — changes may occur despite the competitive schedule provided. Three significant utility items have been affected by outright balancing or removal from all of the game's competitive modes.
A hard blow for professional players, who will have to review their strategies and rotation methods in the midst of major competition.
The problem doesn't lie in the items affected by these balances: a large majority of professional players have been expressing their desire for the Crash Pad to be removed from the competitive playlists for many weeks now. The item offers interesting rotations, but has (too) deeply transformed the science of box fight, by allowing brutal wall openings. The nerf applied seems justified.
The issue is rather the timing with which this balancing correction is applied. Epic Games literally made these modifications on the live servers a few minutes before the beginning of the DreamHack Open September. For professionals, such a change of meta must be worked on beforehand. Plus, the DreamHack — and its $250,000 prize pool — is anything but a small tournament!
The event obviously appears in the competition tab of the game, and has been thought and validated by Epic Games. The players will have to adapt quickly...
