Every new generation of consoles promises better visuals. Most players want things sharper, faster, and cleaner than anything they've ever seen before.
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are no different, promising framerates or frames per second (FPS), higher than ever before. But what exactly is FPS?
FPS dictates how "smooth" something looks on the screen. The higher the frame rate, the better a moving picture looks. Games with a lot of action need better frame rates to accurately show what's going on and feel more responsive.
Games generally run at 30 FPS, meaning 30 rendered frames per second, or 60 FPS. However, some PS5 and Xbox games claim they'll run at 120 FPS, which is the highest of any console yet. That doesn't mean that just because it can, it will. Special 4K TVs are required to process framerates that high.
