Sony confirms next-gen PSVR system for PS5

In a statement released on the official PlayStation Blog, Senior Vice President of Platform Planning & Management Hideaki Nishino revealed the existence of the new headset.

"We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input," he said.

"It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience."

While few details were given in the statement, Nishino did speak of the new VR controller that will form the core of the machine. Using features of the PlayStation 5's DualSense controller as a base, it will also deliver 'great ergonomics'.

The aim of the device, according to Nishino, is to be 'future proof'. No release date was given for the as-yet unnamed device, but Nishino confirmed that it wouldn't come in 2021.

The original PSVR was released in October 2016 with a price of $399, and according to a Sony press release had sold over 5 million units as of the end of 2019.

Several titles have seen success on the platform, including Tetris Effect, developed by Rez creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi.

More details will be shared in the future, with the Tokyo Game Show a likley platform.
