The LetsGoDigital website is still at the top of its game in terms of discovering patents filed by manufacturers. After the Playstation 5 devkit, they have found images and information for the new Playstation VR headset. This new headset, which looks a lot like the previous one, includes 2 cameras at the front and one at the back as well as a microphone. An additional camera is also located on the controller which is similar to the Playstation Move.
A inside-out tracking system — i.e. without an external sensor — seems to have been chosen, which will not surprise anyone. However, several LEDs are installed around the helmet to allow an optional camera to use a system comparable to the PSVR. We assume that the two systems will be able to coexist in order to obtain better accuracy.
The most important element is the ability to use this wireless headset with Bluetooth reception. In addition, the cameras on the headset will allow you to see your environment, which will be projected on the screen in a mirror system as you walk through the menus. It is very likely that an AR operation will also be considered as well. The presence of two separate screens for each eye should make possible to display a stereoscopic 3D that can reduce motion sickness while enhancing immersion.
If you already have a PSVR headset and don't want to buy the new model, rest assured, Sony has confirmed that the old models will be compatible with the PS5.
The PS5 will be released at the end of 2020, but PSVR2 is not expected to be launched at the same time as the new Sony console.
