Much is being said about New World, especially as it could be the first Amazon Games project to properly see release -- and even success -- and a springboard for more developments.
As we have seen during the recent closed beta, New World does a lot of things well. However, it's not all plain sailing, as the recent delay has proved.
Back in March, Amazon promised controller support in New World, despite not being part of the beta. Instead, it would be added as an update.
Now, the official New World social accounts are reporting that it will not have native controller support, but third-party software can be used to add functionality.
Amazon has noted that all actions in New World can be mapped to any compatible third-party device. That should cover most traditional controllers, as well as controllers designed for accessibility such as the Xbox Adaptive Controller.
Offering improved accessibility should always be viewed as a basic requirement during development, and not as a feature that developers work on after receiving feedback.
Amazon has been sparing in details about the controller support. Previously, partial compatibility was mentioned, but in the game files (on Steam, at least) there is no trace.
We'll have to wait to see if they act quickly and solve a problem that will prevent many players from enjoying New World.
It comes to PC on September 28, 2021, and will also be available on Game Pass from day one. There are no monthly subscriptions to pay, like other MMOs.
