With this inadvertent discovery, those playing Metal Gear Solid against the clock can now shave several minutes off their times.

They say the best things in life come by chance. That's what happened to Boba, a streamer with popular group Yogscast.

Playing Metal Gear Solid, the legendary PlayStation game from Hideo Kojima, she encountered a bug that transported her to a later section of the game and saving a ton of time in the process.

The discovery proved to be significant for the speedrunning community, who quickly verified the bug working in all forms of the game.

Playing the game for the very first time, she managed to clip through a Level 6 door, normally not enabled until much later in the game.

Clipping through the door in this way skipped a lengthy sequence involving rappelling down a tower with a rope, after encountering the HIND-D helicopter.

According to the speedrunners, the glitch Boba uncovered is completely new, and had not been previously known in the 20 years plus since the game was first released.

The time savings to speedrunners could amount to as much as two and a half minutes -- a lifetime in speedrunning.

Boba wasn't sure how she caused the bug in question, but speedrunners quickly assembled to replicate it.

Following analysis and test-runs, they realized that it was performed by having Snake stand in front of the door at a certain angle and point his gun at a guard.

When shot at, Snake staggers backwards -- and in this case enables him to clip through the door as if he'd walked through it normally.

It's also been shown to work by having a chaff grenade go off in Snake's hand at the right angle.

This means several Metal Gear Solid speedrunning records will now be broken significantly in the coming days, as a whole new race to be the quickest begins. The record has already been brought down to sub-30 minutes as a result of the glitch.

Boba was asked to name the bug as a tribute to her discovery, choosing the name "Kevin" so as to not come across as egotistical.

However, the speedrunning community had other ideas, naming it the "Boba Skip" in her honour.

The best thing about the whole saga? The impromptu song Boba sang when she found out it was a bug that could change lives.
