In Fortnite, style matters. While the number of playable skins is dangerously close to hitting four figures, some cosmetics seem to be timeless.
This is the case for the Aura outfit, first launched back in May 2019. It's statistically the most-played skin in the game, and is showing no signs of slowing down.
In their traditional ranking of the 25 most played skins, dataminer Lucas7yoshi reveals that 3.64% of all games across the season featured this skin.
This is quite a bit ahead of the next nearest, Sunny (3.08%) and Rick Sanchez (2.87%). Both of these are battle pass skins.
Why is Aura so popular?
There are several factors to consider when assessing the popularity of the Aura skin. Let's have a look.
The Hype Effect
From very early on, the skin benefited from a significant hype. Many streamers, especially in North America, considered it their favorite skin, with this 'celebrity' aspect going a long way to helping the skin surpass sales expectations.
This also applies to other skins too. The Siren outfit, for example, was popularized by superstar pro player Benjyfishy, to such an extent that players often refer to it as "the Benjy".
The Price
Aura is a skin that costs just 800 V-Bucks, which is the lowest possible price for a skin in Fortnite.
While battle pass skins are technically cheaper, they are tied to a specific season and cannot be found in stores after that season has passed.
The frequency of appearing in the shop
Since its launch in May 2019, the Aura skin has returned to the store 31 times. This is a huge figure, and with the skin returning to the store approximately every 30 to 40 days, it gives collectors more opportunities to buy it.
Aura's hitbox
There was a time when many players believed that the size of the skin had an impact on the effective size of the player's hitbox.
While we now know that was inaccurate, many players still see Aura's slim build and tight clothing as harder to hit, visually speaking.
On the other hand, it just happens to be one of the finest skins in the game, and is more discreet than most.
5 - Because it is successful
Let's be honest, Aura's look doesn't exactly represent the pinnacle of Epic Games' creativity. There are many skins that are more fun, or that come from a much juicier collaboration.
However, Aura is still a well-designed skin, with a rebellious air that reminds us of Uma Thurman's character of The Bride from Kill Bill (it's the eyepatch and light hair combo).
Sometimes that's enough for those of us who think Epic overdoes it with collabs.
What do you think? What's your favorite skin?
