Developed and published by the small independent studio Digital Cybercherries, HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed was released in the greatest discretion in early access on PC in 2017, then in full version on Switch in January 2020, and a few months later on Steam.
This is an FPS / TPS , playable in solo or multiplayer (local or online) , in which you play as toys that simply fight waves of other toys. If Hypercharge has everything of a successful game, it took two years for people to talk about it. It all happened very quickly, however, as it soared to 9th place among the best-selling games on Steam in almost a week.
A delayed success
We can say that Hypercharge: Unboxed has gone viral on Twitter, creating a buzz worthy of the greatest AAA. Why ? Simply a rather strange marketing strategy. Indeed, Digital Cybercherries intends to release its FPS-slash-Toy-Story on Xbox , and for that, they are treating Hypercharge as if it had not yet been released, and as if it were a brand new game.
The recent release of the Steam Deck certainly plays a huge role in the success of Hypercharge, since it is compatible and works perfectly on the new Steam support.
Will the buzz survive?
Impossible for the moment to know if the developers had planned this publicity stunt and this crazy craze, since they have not yet responded to the interview request from Kotaku .
After all, the Digital Cybercherries team still hasn't given a release date for Microsoft's console, and they say they've been constantly harassed by toxic fans, to the point that they've been forced to communicate on the subject.
In any case, let's hope for the UK indie developer team that the buzz holds up until the Xbox release date, as Hypercharge: Unboxed is sure to find its audience pretty quickly. Still, the game has to come out at the right time; but with the nose that the developers had on this marketing stunt, anything is possible!
Hypercharge: Unboxed is out now on Nintendo Switch and Steam .
