As always, it is through patents filed by Sony that we are learning more and more about what PSVR2 will offer. Recent leaks seemingly confirm previous predictions on the direction of the VR headset, set for PS5.
While the system may well be ready for the launch of Sony's next console in late 2020, its release will almost certainly be postponed to 2021 in order to separate communication on the two new products.
On the price side, PSVR2 should be close to the original PSVR when it is launched, (around $499), but another version priced at only $250 could also be on the agenda.
According to the patents, the headset should come equipped with acceleration and gyro sensors to detect head movement, helping to reduce motion sickness that some people experience.
Similarly, the presence of eye tracking will not only allow you to adapt to your morphology automatically — thanks to monitoring of the IPD (interpupillary distance) — but also to improve the graphic quality. It does this by concentrating the resolution where you look at the periphery, and therefore avoids affecting performance.
If we combine this with foveated rendering technology to further optimize the display, then graphic quality should be significantly improved.
Finally, the expected resolution is 2560x1440 at a 120 Hz refresh rate, a 220° field of view, and 5 hours of battery life.
That's right, the headset is rumoured to be wireless!
