Legends of Runeterra's next expansion: Call of the Mountain

After Bilgewater, a new region is about to be added to Legends of Runeterra: Targon! While dataminers already discovered the addition of the two regions months, the actual content of the expansions was unknown.

However, in their latest video, Riot Games revealed a lot. Here's a quick summary.

TL ; DR

  • A new region is announced: Targon!
  • A new expansion: Call of the Mountain will be released on August 26
  • It will be part of a set of three expansions that will be released in August, October, and December.
  • A new season will begin when the expansion is released, and a special icon will be up for grabs based on your performance.

New set

Call of the Mountain (Expansion 1) — August 26

  • 89 new cards including 7 new Champions
  • New game modes
  • New cosmetics
  • New competitive season

Expansion 2 — October

  • 40 cards including 3 champions

Extension 3 — December

  • 40 cards 3 champions

New format

To release new cards, Riot decided to do a bit like Magic Arena or Hearthstone during the Year of the Dragon by creating several expansions belonging to the same block. As a consequence, they shared their definitions to avoid any confusion:

  • Expansion: all the cards, champions, cosmetics, and game modes released with a major patch (roughly every two months).
  • Ensemble: a thematically and mechanically cohesive group of cards released over one or more expansions. The set shares its name with the first of these expansions—for example, the cards released in August, October, and December will all be part of the Call of the Mountain set. (This will matter down the line when it comes to deckbuilding rules for different formats and modes!)
  • A new season will begin with each expansion release and will borrow its name. On August 26, the Mountain Call ranked season will begin!

Information about this format

  • On Runeterra, an expansion will be released every two months, one set every 6. each set will focus on a region.
  • The first expansion will be the most consistent with 7 champions + 82 cards. It will contain all the main themes of the new region, as well as several functional decks featuring it.
  • The 2nd and 3rd expansions will have a total of 40 cards, including 3 champions, and will bring new themes and new mechanics, as well as changes to strategies brought about by the first expansion.
  • Thereafter, each set will add a new champion in each region. In a given expansion, some regions will have more cards than others. When the third expansion comes out, and therefore the set is complete, all regions will roughly have the same number of champions and cards.
Legends of Runeterra

Set: Call of the Mountain

  • Call of the Mountain will be composed of a first expansion on August 26 with 7 champions and 82 non-champion cards.
  • A second expansion will be released in October with 3 champions and 37 non-champions
  • A last will be released in December with the same composition as the second.

Then, in February, a new set will be released, with a new region, according to the same scheme!
